"They like the hymns and the church scene, but they fail to get close to Jesus and the cross. That's why I say that religion is hanging around the cross, but Christianity is getting on the cross. It's like the Apostle Paul said, `I am crucified with Christ.' And that means there will be a change in your life."(Steve Hill)
Hill spent five years delivering that message from the pulpit at Brownsville Assembly of God Church in Pensacola, Fla. His stint at Brownsville began at a revival on Father's Day 1995. Church organizers expected the event to last several days at most.
But after numerous conversions and spiritual manifestations, such as healings and people falling down "under God's power," during the services, Hill was asked to continue preaching there indefinitely. So he quickly rearranged his schedule and eventually stayed for five years.
One estimate puts at 300,000 the number of people who came to the altar, either to rededicate their lives to God or to convert to Christianity, during Hill's long-running revival.
